Acute Cholecystitis: If the Pain Suddenly Disappears, Does That Mean the Inflammation Has Improved?
Damsoyu Hospital's Gallstone & Gallbladder Center explains.
Pain caused by acute cholecystitis may suddenly decrease or temporarily disappear.
However, pain relief does not necessarily mean that the inflammation in the gallbladder has resolved.
The pain may be caused by biliary colic, which occurs when a gallstone temporarily blocks the cystic duct and then moves, allowing the pain to subside.
In contrast, acute cholecystitis involves inflammation of the gallbladder, which may persist even after the pain improves.
Particular attention is needed if severe pain in the upper right abdomen lasts for several hours and is accompanied by fever or nausea.
Since biliary colic and acute cholecystitis are difficult to distinguish based on symptoms alone, blood tests and abdominal ultrasound examinations are necessary for an accurate diagnosis.
Therefore, even if the pain has subsided, it is important to seek medical attention promptly if acute cholecystitis is suspected.
