Before gynecomastia surgery: treatment scope, costs and recovery
Prepare questions about the assessment of breast tissue and fat, the proposed operation, cost items, insurance and recovery after gynecomastia surgery.
Start with your situation
Before comparing surgical estimates, ask what tissue the doctor proposes to treat and why. Understanding the assessment and planned scope makes the cost explanation and aftercare instructions easier to follow.
Understanding the procedure
| Term or topic | What it means | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Assessment of the cause | Hormonal changes, medicines and other factors can be relevant. | Which changes in my health or medicines should I discuss? |
| Gland removal and liposuction | Different parts of a possible treatment plan. | Which are proposed in my case, and why? |
| Estimate and insurance | A hospital’s charges and an insurer’s coverage are separate questions. | Which items are included, and what should I send to my insurer? |
What does the estimate include?
| Item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Consultation and tests | Which examinations are planned to assess the tissue? |
| Treatment scope | Are gland removal and liposuction both part of the estimate? |
| Anesthesia and supplies | What is included for anesthesia and any recommended garments or supplies? |
| Aftercare | Which wound checks and review appointments are included? |
Use this checklist to ask what applies to your care. Items are not necessarily required or included in an estimate.
Check payment and insurance separately
Ask the hospital how your care will be billed. Ask your insurer whether the proposed treatment abroad is covered, whether prior approval is needed and which documents to keep. Check any Korean health insurance eligibility separately if it is relevant to you.
Recovery and your return journey
Ask about wound care, showering and any garments you have been advised to use. Explain your work and upper-body exercise separately, and ask how to adjust each activity. Before travelling home, confirm follow-up and whom to contact about recovery.
Preparing for your consultation
- When the changes started and whether one or both sides are affected.
- Medicines and existing examination reports.
- The discomfort or changes you would like to discuss.
- Work and exercise plans, and questions from your insurer.
Questions to bring to your appointment
- Why are gland removal or liposuction proposed for me?
- Which tests, supplies and aftercare visits are included?
- How should I adjust work, exercise and travel during recovery?
